Bearded Irises

Bearded Irises also known as the Flag Iris are grown from rhizomes and classed as perennial plants.  Bearded Irises are by far the most popular of the irises, as they are easy to plant, grow and maintain.

However, enthusiasts tend to want to produce bigger, better, larger blooms from their plants and this takes a little more time, effort and maintenance of the plants.White Bearded Iris

The rhizomes as shown left, grow nestled on top of the ground,  but are not fully covered by soil.  This allows plenty of sunlight to the rhizomes.  I must admit, there have been occasions when my rhizomes have been accidentally covered with soil and the rhizomes managed to make their way to the top of the soil and continued to produce beautiful blooms.

Different Irises

There are about 1,500 different irises.  African, Japanese, Siberian, Louisiana, Dutch, Bearded, Tall, Flag, Spanish, English, Dwarf,  and the list goes on.

The only color not available in the Iris range reportedly, is red.
